Chi-Ju Juliet Lai - Clarinetist

Chi-Ju Juliet Lai is an active chamber and orchestral musician, as well as a passionate educator. A native of Taiwan and later resided in Hong Kong, she came to America at the age of thirteen to pursue her musical studies. She is a graduate of Interlochen Arts Academy and holds the Doctor of Musical Arts in Clarinet Performance from Boston University, M.M. from Yale University and B.M. from Rice University. Dr. Lai is the clarinetist in the acclaimed quintet, Vento Chiaro, who has served as the woodwind quintet in residence at Boston University Tanglewood Institute since 2002. With Vento Chiaro, she has performed in prestigious venues including Jordan Hall, Ozawa Hall in Tanglewood and live performances on WGBH…etc. Since 1999, she has held the second clarinet position in Atlantic Symphony Orchestra. She is the founding member of Boston Octet and was previously a member of Xanthos Ensemble and United Woodwind Quintet with which she toured to Japan. As an active freelancer, her orchestral performances have included appearance with Charleston Symphony Orchestra, Tyrol Symphony Orchestra (Austria), Vermont Symphony Orchestra, New Bedford Symphony, Back Bay Chorale and Eastern Connecticut Symphony. Dr. Lai is currently on faculty at Phillips Exeter Academy, University of Rhode Island and Bridgewater State University.
